How to Gain Confidence

Confidence isn’t something that naturally comes to everyone. Unfortunately, it’s something that takes training, grit, and, funnily, confidence itself. Without getting into a paradox saying that it takes confidence to have confidence, it’s kind of difficult to describe exactly how to gain confidence, because truly, it does take a lot of confidence to be confident. However, here are a couple changes you can make in your life to feel more confident and ready for whatever the world throws at you.

  1. Focus on yourself. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Going on social media and scrolling through the highlights of someone else’s life is completely fine- it can even be empowering. However, the second you start to compare their highlights to your behind-the-scenes, your confidence will diminish as fast as a light switching off. Each and every one of us in this world has something to be grateful for and we should all think about how thankful we are for what we have and not lust over what is not ours. We often forget that we have so much when peering into another’s life. Thus, focusing on yourself, centering in on the great things in your life, and being thankful for them can install a great deal of confidence in a person.

  2. Keep a positive mindset. You will always succeed in life if you keep a positive view on it. Always try to find the good in things, no matter how dark it gets. Positivity can influence confidence a lot, even though it may not seem like it. Staying positive means you are also keeping a positive view of yourself. And without a positive view of oneself, you cannot have confidence. So, stay positive that life will turn out the way you want it to be and you will definitely feel better about yourself throughout the day.

  3. Set big AND small goals. Setting big goals is great, but if we don’t attain them, it can consume the rest of our achievements. Thus, we need to set small stepping-stone goals. These can help gauge progress towards larger goals, as well as centre focus on all of our achievements and not just our defeats - every small win can inspire confidence. Small goals are also helpful in staying organized, which is definitely a plus for your mental health and time management skills.

  4. Do one thing out of your comfort zone every day. Having a growth mindset is just as important as being proud of where you are. When you see yourself grow, you feel more confident because you know you have improved. Seeing what you thought was impossible become possible can greatly improve a person’s self-esteem, so always aiming to grow and do better in life will help keep you be more motivated and confident in yourself and your potential growth.

Confidence is not public speaking. It’s not being comfortable around other people. It’s not about how good you appear to other people or how you speak and act around them. Confidence comes from within and only when we realize that, will we truly have it. It’s loving yourself for who you are and being positive that you will make it in the future, whatever your it may be. It’s recognizing your achievements and trying to grow further. Confidence takes time, but soon enough, you will have the confidence it takes to be confident.
