As we approach the presidential election, there is a lot of discussion about the importance of voting and the need to head to the polls. These urges make sense because there is a lot at stake in this election and it’s important that we continue to be civically engaged.

Kamala Harris’ name has been at the forefront of all news outlets over the past month as it was announced that she would be Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden’s running mate. There is no denying that this is a historic moment as she is the first African-American and South Asian female to be in this position.

On a national scale, we are experiencing one of the toughest moments in history. But, we must also reflect upon the achievements made within the past month.

“I can’t breathe.” Despite the man’s cries for help and exclamations of his inability to breathe, the police officer kept his knee on his neck for eight minutes and forty-six seconds. This man was murdered. This BLACK man was murdered. His name was George Floyd. Say that name. Remember that name. Continue to carry his name into the revolution that we are currently witnessing.

The month of May is an important month for the Overachiever community. We get to celebrate our diverse heritage, cultures and acknowledge pioneers in our communities.
