The Beauty of Platonic Love

We often think of romantic love as the only type of love that exists, but platonic love can be just as powerful and meaningful. Platonic love is not just a myth, but a real concept that many of us experience in our day-to-day lives — one that can bring us closer to understanding ourselves better and developing a greater appreciation for life.

In a society that is often obsessed with physical attraction, platonic love is often overlooked and undervalued, but it can be just as strong and meaningful as any other type of relationship.  It is an emotion that is shared between two people without the expectation of physical intimacy. Platonic love is based on mutual admiration, understanding, respect, and strong friendship. It is a bond that can be incredibly rewarding and can help us to understand what it means to be truly connected to another person on an emotional level.

In her 1994 article for the Virginia Law Review, MC Nussbaum argues that platonic love can provide a number of benefits to those who choose it. She claims that it can offer a more secure and meaningful connection than many other types of love, as it is based on shared values, interests, and mutual respect. Nussbaum also suggests that it can be a good alternative to romantic relationships, as it is not subject to the same kinds of pressures and expectations.

“Platonic love knows nothing of holding together;

all the know is their souls are into each other”

                                                                                     Priyaka Sharma

Platonic love is an opportunity to be emotionally vulnerable with another person in a way that can be deeply healing and transformative. It is a chance to connect on a deeper level, to have meaningful conversations, and to share life experiences with a trusted confidante. Here are some ways in which the power of platonic love can be seen:

Unlike romantic relationships, which can be subject to the whims of passion and desire, friendships based on platonic love are built on a foundation of mutual respect, trust, and understanding. Platonic love between friends can provide a sense of belonging, security, and emotional support that can last a lifetime.

Another example of the power of platonic love can be seen in the bond between a parent and child. The love between a parent and child is often described as unconditional, and this is true of platonic love as well. The bond between a parent and child is not based on physical attraction or romantic feelings, but rather on a deep and abiding sense of love and connection. This type of love can provide a child with a sense of security, stability, and unconditional love that can help them to grow and thrive.

Platonic love can also be seen in the relationships between mentors and mentees. A mentor is someone who provides guidance, support, and wisdom to a mentee, helping them to grow and develop in their personal and professional lives. This type of relationship is based on a deep sense of respect and admiration, rather than on physical attraction or romantic feelings. The essence of platonic love in this context can be seen in the way that a mentor can provide a mentee with a sense of direction and purpose, helping them to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Finally, the relationships between colleagues and co-workers also reflect the strength of platonic love. In the workplace, people often form deep connections with their colleagues, based on shared goals, values, and experiences. Platonic love in the workplace can provide a sense of camaraderie, support, and mutual respect that can help to create a positive and productive work environment. This type of love can also lead to the formation of lasting friendships and professional connections that can be valuable throughout a person's career.

 “And in platonic love there can be no tragedy because in that love all is clear and pure”

    Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Platonic love can give us a sense of security and belonging. It can provide us with a sense of community and support. It can also be a powerful tool for personal growth and development. By being vulnerable with another person, we can learn more about ourselves, develop a better sense of empathy, and even become more confident in our own abilities. It can be a source of joy, comfort, and companionship. It can give us a sense of validation, acceptance, and understanding. Platonic love can help us to feel seen and appreciated for who we are. It is a love that is focused on the other person's well-being and happiness, without any expectation of personal gain. This selflessness can be a powerful force in building strong and lasting relationships and has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health, reducing feelings of loneliness and social isolation and can provide a sense of belonging and connection that can help to combat feelings of depression and anxiety.

The power of platonic love is undeniable. This type of love is based on mutual respect, understanding, and selflessness, which allows for a powerful and enduring bond to form. Ultimately, the beauty of platonic love lies in its ability to provide a profound and enduring connection between individuals that enriches and enhances their lives in countless ways. Whether in friendships, family relationships, or professional connections, platonic love is a force that can help us to build lasting and fulfilling relationships that enrich our lives in countless ways.
