If You Love People & the Planet, You Need to Know These Accounts

It may seem like the world is burning online. It may seem like things are falling apart at the seams, unfixable, unchanging, steadfastly heading downhill.

It is easy to lock yourself in that worldview.

First of all—it is ok to feel this way. The sheer overwhelmingness of existence paired with a barrage of information in every virtual corner makes it easy to feel lost. But equally important as it is to take breaks away from our social media accounts, it is always important to fill those spaces with positive influences.

So, in celebration of our July theme—Solar Power—we want to highlight some amazing social media pages that can bring some light to your feed.

If you’re tired of traditional news outlets cluttering your feed, give @impact a follow. As a “digital destination for young people shaping the future,” its colorful yet compact posts deliver meaningful content that actually matters.

Some of their most recent posts cover things like Vietnamese-American nail salon culture, fundraising for Planned Parenthood, and body image reminders for the summer. From headlines to self-care to social causes, @impact provides everything young people need to know in our current social climate

@environment is managed by the same people that make @impact, just primarily focused on climate change. More than alarm-ringing headlines, @environment pushes resources to help all stay informed in our growing environmental crisis. Some recent posts include Shein and the issue of fast fashion, a new study on bees and their senses, and the rise in sea lion deaths along the Southern California coast.

A well-known Instagram account for aesthetically-pleasing affirmations, @wetheurban remains a mainstay in my feed as gentle reminders for self-care and self-love. Especially when surrounded by news that only belittle our experiences and suffering, their posts are gentle reminders to breathe, relax, and live despite.

Their daily affirmations, reminders for the year, and featured artist posts are perfect additions for bringing joy back to your usual scroll.

Want to stay updated on news that’s actually relatable? @asianfeed is a fun account that stays on top of trends, media, and all things Asian-American culture.

Some of their posts include the release of a new Pokemon-themed sleep-tracking app, this year’s Filipino-American Gerber baby, and the staggering 13 nominations Netflix’s ‘BEEF’ received at this year’s Emmy awards.

Here’s a climate news space that will hopefully inspire more hope than despair. @futureearth is a climate club for all, delivering news, resources, and affirmations tinged with sensitivity.

A feature I love about them is their “Good News Tuesdays,” a way of balancing all the bad news with a stream of positivity. It covers climate wins from all over the globe, providing a much-needed source of comfort amidst all the bad.
